Info on TV and newly bought 5th wheel

I have a 2005 Dodge 2500 diesel with a 5.9. Just purchased a 2012 Forest River Cardinal 3550RL. I've read a lot of forum results on towing, all with different answers for different set ups. Going by Dodge's tow guide I am right at the limit for GVWR, and that's dry. How much wiggle room do I have and is it safe to actually go over? Hate the thought that I may have to look for another vehicle since I just purchased the Dodge. An experienced answer from someone that has or is in the same situation would be greatly appreciated. In a canundrum now wondering what to do. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

Thanks in advance, Bruce

  • There isn't a lot of difference in a Dodge 2500 vs 3500 SRW in 2005.

Many here (myself included) will argue that the real limitations on your rig are your axle and tire weight ratings, which you are likely well under.

I towed about 16000 pounds with my 2003 Dodge 3500 for 9 years, and never felt unsafe. I will admit that towing that weight with my current truck is much more comfortable though.
  • You made the big mistake.
Started pulling my Cedar Creek with a 2500 Chevy. Loaded ready to travel it was 1500 pounds over GVWR. Towed fine until I went to the mountains. Then it became scary as,heck. Being pushed down the hill is really no fun. Lioking at strictly the trailers GVWR and using the basic 20% pin weight number you will quickly see how badly overloaded you are. Adding air bags, bigger tires, or what else people will try and tell you to do cannot change the basic fact. You will exceed the truck manufacturers GVWR.
