Infrared heater?

We are camp hosting so we like using electric heat since it's free. Need a new space heater and am wondering about the infrared heaters I'm seeing. Do they heat as well as a regular space heater?

  • cheap heat won't work for urban docking and does not fail over to propane unless it is modified. The price is finally more or less reasonable, but only if you DIY.

I would say the best retrofit is a Cheap Heat system, as it uses the existing furnace fan and such.

I personally use (or used, as it is A/C weather here in Texas) Vornado heaters, which do a great job at warming up an entire vehicle. They won't feel warm in one location as well as other heater types, but are good at getting an entire space up to par.

Oil-filled are quiet, but for me, they take up too much space, so a fan forced one is the next best thing.

    X2!!

Cheap Heat here also, also a host spent January in South Beach, and the Cheap Heat system kept us cozy all month.
System has far more safety features than any portable will ever be.
We have dogs so one more issue with portables.

Cheap Heat uses ZERO floor or counter space!

  • for routine heating, you can not beat an oil filled one. mine are on all winter, 24/7
    bumpy
  • The infrared heaters are typically much more directional than the other types mentioned. Most don't have a fan and the output is most noticeable right in front of it. Takes longer for the heat to circulate, partly because the infrared must first hit something and warm IT up.

The small heater I have that I like the best is a ceramic one that is round.
The fan is in the bottom and it blows up and then out in all directions.
  • Infrared are my favorite heater, but I generally use oil filled as they are a bit safer.
  • X2 on the oil being quiet and if you want small the ceramic heaters are great. I use an infrared in my SB basement and it works well also.
  • I have one in my S&B. It works well but, I don't think it's much better than other space heaters. And infrared heaters are usually a little larger.

They're all around 1500 watts, so all electric space heaters put out about the same amount of heat.

The infrared are fairly quiet. If you want quiet, the oil filled type is the best choice.
