Is 6,150 too heavy for my Roadtrek to tow?

I drive a 2004 Roadtrek 190 versatile whose specs state: 6400lbs tow weight, 14000lbs GWCR.
I'm considering stepping up from towing a 4,100 lbs Zinger to a 6,150lbs Rockwood camper trailer.
Is the weight going to be a problem towing?

  • You are likely already at your rear axle limit. You really need to weigh your van to find out if you have enough capacity left.
  • What chassis is under your vehicle?

It makes a huge differance to have a Ford E-350 with a V10 or a sprinter with only 15" rims and 160 HP engine.

  • The first thing you need to do is drive that Roadtrek over a scale to find out how much it REALLY weighs. Then subtract that number from your 14,000 GCWR to find out how much you can tow.

Keep in mind the GVWR also and the RAWR. Those numbers probably will be very close to their limits, or over, when you add the tongue weight of the larger trailer.

Also keep in mind that your tongue weight is usually 200lbs or more over the "brochure" or advertised tongue weight of any given trailer.

I have a 31ft MH, V-10 and I would NOT tow it. You'd be overweight after you got into the drivers seat and filled the fridge!
  • How does the Roadtrek tow the Zinger? Is that 6150 for the Rockwood empty or loaded? If empty, plan on another 1000 lbs of stuff that you'll pack in there, so you'll likely be at 7000 when you hit the road. You won't know if you are under the 14000 GCWR until you weigh the RoadTrek, which I would advise doing as a first step. I would also weigh the Zinger and see where you stand with actual numbers before deciding what to do about the Rockwood.

I'll admit you don't see many with Class B's towing a travel trailer.
