I spend ridiculous amounts of time trying to get google maps to cough up the smaller roads -- zooming in and out, trying terrain mode -- then I pull out the ol' paper map and they are right there!
But the phone is more convenient, where I have a signal. Is there an app for this?
I'm talking about anything from minor state highways down to BLM 2-tracks. I'm specifically excluding topo maps because I need a scale where I can see 100-200 mile routes at a glance... like, say, a AAA map.
Umm.. the detail you are asking for is impossible to do with a tiny phone screen.
You want 100-200 miles at a glance, you are not going to get 100-200 miles at a glance secondary roads detail on a postage stamp size screen.
You WILL have to zoom in closely, more like 30-40 miles and even that may be iffy..
I have a Walmart Atlas which is 20 miles per inch, to get the level of detail you are looking for the Atlas takes two pages for most states and some states are broken into 4 pages.
That Atlas is 10 1/2" x 15 1/2" pages and two pages is 21" wide and covers about 380 miles..
You would need a 23" wide screen monitor at the very least to get the level of detail you are wanting.
Yeah, we HAVE tried using maps on a 10" tablet, cannot do it without constantly zooming in and out along with bunches of scrolling up/down and side to side.
Don't believe me? Take a photo of one of your maps with the detail you seek then see if you can even read to Interstate roads without zooming in..
Paper maps are what you seek, not electronic nirvana..
