Two winters ago on the way home from Arizona we had a rubber piece that hand been chewed on around our fan fairing which got caught in the radiator fan, breaking of a blade and sending it through the radiator that cost right at two grand to repair. Let me now fast forward to this past winter while at Usery Mountain Park and noticed many trucks and RV's with clear tube white lights on the ground around their rigs at night. I asked my wife is this a new decorating trend? I then spotted another camper using these lights walking by and asked him. He told me to open my hood for an explanation. There on the back of my dura max engine block was a mound of insulation chewed off my fire wall. I reached in to remove it and got a handful of Buckhorn cactus pieces stuck to my fingers. He explained the Pack Rat problem and told me that the rats will not cross the lights. I have to believe him and am wondering have any of you experienced damage from these critters. I now know who and where our truck was damaged the year before.

The lights will somewhat repel pack rats. In the rodent genus Neotoma ONLY. This is anecdotal evidence only. There are no scientific studies that will verify this.

Maybe it wasn't pack rats?And, maybe I watch too many Stephen King movies. :)

I had squirrels, rats, or something chew wires and vacuum hoses on my previous truck three times. And built nests there. Bought Critter Ridder at Home Depot, sprayed all around under hood, and no more problem.

Our co-camp host had them all around his MH. I saw rodents (golden mantle squirles, Thompson tree squirles) running over them with total disregard. Waste of money!

spray coyote urine around the engine and that will keep them away guaranteed. just the smell will also keep you away. so just put the urine on cotton balls and remove them when you drive off. the heat will make the urine unbearable if you forget.

And coyote urine is available where? Not many people keep a pet coyote and even fewer have them trained to pee in a bottle.

I guess that would depend on what sort of coyote you are talking about.

Are the coyotes two legs or four legs?

I have seen the ones with four legs and maybe spotted a few of the two legs kind down South where we live.

Would both kind work?

Thank you Muddydogs for the tip. How simple. I should have thought to do this.. The problem at the campground is so bad I believe Maricopa County Parks should give the guests a heads up. We stopped using our bird feeder there thinking that the seeds might attract the rats at night. Thanks to all for taking the time to respond to my question.

The easiest solution for your vehicle is to open the hood. These rodents are looking for a warm, dark, dry cave like area to build there nest and the engine compartment is the perfect place with the added bonus of having great nesting material. By opening the hood you take away the dark, dry cave and the engine cools faster so its not as inviting. All the places I have been that have rodent problems the locals open there hoods then set them down on a block of wood so there open about a foot or so to keep the rodents from staying but keep the hood low enough that a strong wind won't rip it off.

Had a problem with grey squirrels eating the wiring in my Suburban a few years back. Insurance paid for the repairs the first time, but said I was on my own the second. I mixed dish soap and water with Texas Pete hot sauce. The soap would make it sticky and when they licked it off of their feet the hot sauce got them. Never had a problem after that. However the mixture did turn out to be corrosive and pitted the metal parts of the motor.

Isn't that the truth! I had two Jack Russells (Petie has passed) and you are correct! Petie especially liked snakes but Murphy prefers squirrels.
