You should NOT go below the original recommended pressure more than a couple of pounds though......and not likely that will make much difference. The recommended pressure is what is on the placard inside the door jamb or in the owners manual; NOT what it says on the sidewall of the tire.
Also, if the tires are original equipment, they are 12 years old now and probably are getting HARD just from age......and probably were stiff to start with.
It is generally accepted that tires should not be used after about 7 or 8 years and become dangerous after 10. Highway tires, that is.
