The absolute BEST campsite I think we've ever had were our last two camps. Over Christmas week we were at Florida Caverns State Park. Being Christmas week, there was virtually no one there. There was a potential flooding in process, so even the campground hosts evacuated. That left the campground absolutely ... completely .... DARK! It was wonderful!
Then over the week of March 10, we went to McCormicks Creek State Park in South Carolina. There again, there were only 4 camper there, and looked like 2 of them were camp ground hosts. Talk about DARK! Wow! That was great! McCormick's Creek State Park campground is in the trees, on a peninsula, surrounded by water on 3 sides. If it were not for the main highway that crossed the lake, there was no lights anywhere! Simply AWESOME.
I've never understood why so many like to leave outside lights on all night. I can most definitely understand them being on when they are actually outside, but once in bed??? why? Light pollution is a real problem at campgrounds, I will admit.
I'm fortunate to live in the country. It's nice and dark where I live. Especially in the winter, when the fields are down, you can see across the fields quite a distance. I can see houses with their outside lights on, spotted everywhere. And along the horizon, almost every direction is a glow from a neighboring town or city. Even this spoils the really DARK feeling. But still, it's DARK where I live, and I don't leave outside lights on at night.
So I just don't understand the great need to keep lights on all night when camping? If you're getting up in the middle of the night to make a trip to the bath house, isn't that what flashlights were created for?
