I've played golf many times in Florida with lots of water of course and have yet to see a gator. But I was playing in Cancun many years ago on a hotel course. First hole I hit the driver down the right side next to a bunker. In it sunning himself was a huge (to me) gator. I approached carefully hit my next shot and drove away quickly. I think he was asleep in the warm sand and just didn't want to bother me.
