Several years ago, a bunch of guys, went spec trout fishing in the panhandle of Fla. We stayed at an old camp right on the waterway west of Panama City I think.
Every night there was banging and sound like someone knocking on the door. In the morning there were fresh tracks and tail drag marks all through the camp. When we arrived a couple guys talked about sleeping outside on the ground. I don't think the crabs would have let them settle in long enough for the gators to get them but who knows.
Saw a few of them sunning, away from the camp. I'm sure a couple of them were 14 ft or longer. Looked big enough to take on a Volkswagen even a small pickup.
