Just passing along some prayers for the midwest

Nirtohorse, the children who died in the school weren't killed by the tornado. The Oklahoma medical examiner listed cause of death this morning:

Antonia Candelaria, 9, mechanical asphyxia; Kyle Davis, 8, blunt force trauma; Janae Hornsby, 9, asphyxia; Sydney Angle, 9, mechanical asphyxia; Emily Conatzer, 9, mechanical asphyxia; Nicolas McCabe, 9, mechanical asphyxia; Christopher Legg, 9, mechanical asphyxia;

No one has yet explained "mechanical ashyxia" but it means they didn't drown, or die from trauma, but were suffocated.
Someone told me that this school had over 400 students, and unfortunately these seven children were somewhere in the school and suffocated. All the other students and teachers were spared.

Most Oklahoma schools are built with a safe area for students during tornadoes that work pretty well.

Another story coming out is that FEMA has been holding up $2,000,000 in funds for Moore to build storm shelters. This was offered after a similar tornado in 1999, but FEMA keeps changing the application guidelines and preventing the funding from reaching the community.
Probably 30-40% of the homes in the community have some type of safe room or underground storm shelter. Most people will invest in some way to protect themselves and their families. There were several underground shelters that had too much debris on top of the door, but the rescuers found 119 people and freed them from their shelters. (most shelters are registered with the city so the responders know where to look),

Just continue to pray for the people who have lost someone.

I can see the rational is beginning to fall out the bottom on this. I feel for the children who had to attend a school with no adequate tornado shelter. I must be missing something here.....

People like the midwest for the quality of life. While this is a very tragic event people will rebuild. A good friends parents live in Moore OK and the 99 tornado missed their home and so did the 2013 tornado. They have no desire to move, This is home.

Stay where you're at. Living underground sounds like a viable solution for you.
No place is 100% safe, but some places are safer than others.

Yes, the homes will be rebuilt and the people will move back in. If you live in Oklahoma long enough you will realize that storms and tornados are a part of daily life in the spring.
I build new homes and in 1999 I rebuilt several of the homes that were destroyed.
The loss of life during these storms is terrible, but many Oklahomans have storm shelters and safe rooms and that's the reason the death toll is 24 and not 240 or more.
If FEMA never showed up in Oklahoma it would be OK, because Okies know how to take care of each other.
And thank you for your prayers for this area, they are being felt and are appreciated.

Evidently some on here use a tragedy to grandstand their political views.
