Kayak Hauling

We have 2 kayaks, our TV is a conversion van, our TT is a 23ft America-Lite. I've seen the RV Kayak Rack - kind of pricey at $1100, plus we have a large window in the back. The most logical would be to put them on top of the van. Anyone have any suggestions/ideas I'm not thinking of?
  • How long are the yaks?
For many years we carried a pair of ten footers on a home built bracket attached to the bumper on our fiver . We used boat stainless cleats attached near top of fiver . Looked and worked good , looked kinda factory .Did not work very well with my 17 foot yak ! Now we carry on top of pickup cab on an arrangement leading to front bumper , known locally as my rocket launcher .
  • You could build a rack on rear hitch like i did, rack works great

  • If you are up to a tandem tow, Yakima makes an ultralight trailer. Depending on the width of the cross-bars, you can haul a couple kayaks and at least one, if not two bikes.

It is on my list to try once I get a rear-mounted camera to better see it towing.
  • The RV Kayak Rack is not always the best solution either. Depending on the length of the kayaks you use they may cause clearance issues with height restrictions. My kayaks are 13 feet long. Stand those on end behind the camper and there will be problems.

Thule and Yakima offer many options that are relatively inexpensive compared to the RV Kayak Rack. You might find a used rack on the web for cheap.
  • Unless you can stuff them IN the van, I think the only other option is racks on top of it (unless the conversion makes that unfeasible). Thule and Yakima make many types of racks for $250 or so, much less than the $1100. They can most likely outfit the top of the TT as well.
