My 3 grandkids are being pushed, and helped financially, by their parents and by myself, to stay in school and get as much education as their IQ can handle. Fortunately, all three are of higher-than-average IQ. And, both their parents earned two degrees.
The only time they go fishing or camping is when they visit me (for short periods). None of them see themselves buying any camping equipment until they achieve their education goals (doctorates in their fields).
All three agree that the size of the middle class is dwindling. None of them offer any solutions to the problem. All they know is that they will try their best to end up in the upper class of society.
Here's the problem, not everyone is born into enough money, nor of sufficiently high IQ, to achieve upper-class status.
IMO a full discussion of the OP's subject matter would need to include politics. And, I ain't going there.
