We had something simular happen. My wife had an old can of pepper spray. The inside of the container corroded to the point where the canister ruptured and sprayed all over the bedroom. We found out when we came home. It took a while to determine what took place. Many hours later and 2 large rental fans the smell was mostly removed and cleaned up. A call to the company that made the product said we should have kept it 2 years and then disposed of it used or not. I thought it odd that if that is the case it should have an expiration date.
Ours we carry at work has a 5 yr shelf life. But they think they can actually go longer. They are only guaranteeing it for 5 years.
