Lightweight Bicycle suggestion

Check what weight your rear bumper is rated for. Mine is for 100 lb and the spare tire is back there. We have a front receiver on the truck and carry the bikes there on a Swagman carrier.

Don't hang the bikes get something like a Swagman 2x that supports the bike by the wheels. Weight reductions in bikes come at a high price $$$$$$.

Looked through the Trek site, very little change in weight as you go from steel to aluminum, a pound or 2.

You didn't say what you have for a rack. Some like the 1up makes it very easy to load and unload the bikes. It is rated for the back of RV's and is built to last forever. Of course you pay for the privilege.

I would be looking for an alternate way to carry those bikes. If you get a lightweight bike, as already mentioned it is going to be fairly expensive. I would NOT want to put an expensive bike on the rear of the trailer for several reasons.

1. Too much bouncing goes on back there and it is too hard on the bikes and the carriers.

2. Too much dirt and dust back there.

3. Too much chance of them getting hit by a following vehicle.

4. Too much chance of the bumper or hitch failing from the bouncing of the bikes.

I would find a way to carry them in or on the truck or trailer - anyplace other than the rear of the trailer.

Exactly my thought. If those are good mountain bikes almost any beach cruiser is likely to be heavier. Beach cruisers aren't designed to be lightweight. You could likely find some but I would imagine they'll be pricey.

Another option may be folding bikes which could be carried inside. Depends on how you use the bikes.

The 7 speed folding Dahon's are very good bikes, but certainly not designed for off-road. Also, not inexpensive.

Do you have quick release wheels? If so you could use fork mounts on 2x4s and carry them in your trailer. I do this to carry them in the back of our truck.

"Beach cruisers" are heavy !
Get an light weight aluminum or carbon fiber frame mountain bike.

We have aluminum alloy hybrid bikes. They are similar in geometry to mountain bikes, so they feel the same, but are lighter weight and have narrower tires meant for street riding. Ours are Diamondback Edgewood, so not the greatest/lightest/most expensive, but they are vastly superior to cheapo steel mountain bikes.

Still, they aren't super lightweight and will be a lot of weight bouncing on a rear bumper... Good luck!
