Long Term RV Storage

I won't be able to use my 10 year old FW for at least another year and would like some advice on how to keep gunk from growing in the fresh water tank and anything I can do to preserve it. I've only taken it out twice in the last two years.

I currently keep it plugged in with a dehumidifier running.
  • Drain it, then sterilize it good when you bring it out of storage.
  • Personally, I would sanitize the tank. Then drain it before putting the RV into storage.
  • Your bigger problem will be mold and mildew inside the rig. Snowbird friends of ours had a medical emergency which made them store their rig for a year and a half.

Their pans full of cat litter and me replacing a couple of large damp rid buckets after a year was all that was needed. The bigger concern would be a roof leak going unnoticed. If you can store under a roof all the better.
  • Thanks. It's going to be stored in my yard and I'm going to continue using the dehumidifier. I'm concerned about rodents, dried out seals, roof leaks, dry rot, etc.
  • If you don't have roof vent covers get some and keep your vents open at all times.
  • Turn on the air , refig, water pump , et al once a month for an hour or so to keep seals wet . keep a cat inside to keep out the mice !
  • I've got two electronic rodent repellents. I use to have only one, but it failed two years ago. I discovered that it wasn't working when the rodents chewed through the wiring for the brakes and lights. That cost me $1100 to repair. Now I keep one working inside and one in the front compartment. It doesn't really seem to bother the squirrels that hang out in the trees above the RV but I don't seem to have the problems with them getting inside. I don't think the cats would appreciate being locked in the trailer all week. They would probably do more damage than the rodents.
