Turning on a turn signal only seems to serve as a prompt for the idiot in the next lane to speed up and NOT let you in. It's not the Indy500! Let a guy in!
For me, I look in my mirrors, turn on my signal, stop looking in the mirrors, count to 6 and move over. I make sure there is plenty of time in that six count for that driver to maintain his position for me to move over. If he chooses to take my turn signal as a challenge, then GAME ON!
Ya know... that's exactly what it is, now that I think of it;
Most drivers see another driver's turn signal as a challenge and speed up. Test it some time;
Get in a position where another car is pacing you, riding back a ways and in an adjacent lane. Turn on your signal to move into his lane and see if he doesn't hit the gas to try and stop you from coming over in front of him. I've done this and, without fail, the driver speeds up!! Which is why I either don't signal, or signal, and quit looking. Why would I want to see the look of terror on his face when he realizes I'm not bluffing when I indicated I wanted to come over.
