Looking at a TT in place of the MH

I am again thinking about a change in our camping unit. We have been very happy over the last 10 years with our Airstream 35' diesel pusher. Many miles and smiles.
A few years back I looked hard at trading the MH and going 5th wheel.In the end decided against it. This year I looked at a number of travel trailers and liked the layout in a number of them that I saw.
I went over to the RV dealer close to me and he showed me a Passport Elite 31' with a couple of slides. This layout seemed very doable for my DW and I. It does not have the storage of the MH but does have a nice bed and seating area.
I have a 2010 F150 Ford with tow pkg. Low mileage truck. I like this truck a lot it has the 5.4 liter V-8. I do not know if this would tow the Passport all right or not. The Passport is 6200 dry weight. which seems like it would leave a couple thousand pounds for the necessities and extras. I know I would put Airbags and maybe springs under the rear end of the truck I also have been told that a Diablo tuner would help get the engine up to a better towing machine. I guess I am willing to put a couple of grand into my pickup ( I like it that much) to get it close to the f250 capability.
So there are a couple of questions here and just looking for someone to talk sensibly to me. I know a 250 or 350 would be a much better truck but don't want the hassle of swapping. If I did I guess I would look a 5th wheel some more. Am I thinking about this in a wrong way ? Is this enough unit to travel for 5-6 weeks at a time a few times per year? some of the drawbacks are obvious what should I look for that is not so obvious ? Does a good anti sway hitch help forgive the TT pulling draw backs ? just asking before jumping.
  • Your main concern is not how much your truck can tow....it's how much weight you can put on the back of it. Keep in mind that the tt's dry weight will only be used one time (when you pull it home from the dealers). From then on, the weight will continue to grow the longer you have it and keep putting things into it. At 6200 lbs dry, you can probably figure on 7500 lbs in the near future. With a common figure of 15% for tongue weight, you're looking at close to or over 1000 lbs.

    What is the payload capacity of your truck? Add up the weight of you, passengers, camping equipment, tools, and everything (anything) else you put in or on the truck including the hitch system and add that to the tongue weight. I think you'll be surprised.

    Adding air bags, springs, and other stuff will not increase your payload capacity.

    I think if you really want to keep your 150, I'd look for a lighter (not necessarily smaller) TT. It's pretty common around here to never go above 80% of the weight ratings of the tow vehicle. That always insures that you're not overloading or creating problems for it.

  • I guess it depends on how much space you feel you need.
    A truck of any sort, doesn't fit into my lifestyle or locale, so I'm going for an SUV that can pull a smaller TT. Not FTing for life and we like to use a camp site/the unit as a place to rest the head, chill as we put meals together. I expect to use our approx 18 footer for months at a time.
