Looking for a toad vehical

We found our car. A 2008 Saturn Aura. It had low miles,could be towed and handles beautifully. Thanks for all your help!!

If you are interested in a 4WD auto, the Subaru makes a good toad. However, be sure you get a manual shift. The automatics are not tow-able.

Look for a Jeep YJ!
They were made from about 1989, to about 1995. ( there was no model year 1996!)
Or a newer Jeep TJ. More money, but has coil springs for more comfortable ride, and still is a BLAST to drive!
Another one to look at may be a Cherokee XJ, it was made from about 1987 to about 2001, and is a big larger, but not much heavier than a Wrangler. You will need to find a 4x4 model, but that will only make your flat tow easier!!

Thank you everyone for the suggestions. We spent the day yesterday going to dealers. We will be looking again today, but the cars mentioned on this post have been added to our list. We have decided to take our time. We will try to save more, and may cancel our FL trip in order to get a nice tow. We don't want to empty our savings, but are willing to save and wait for a decent tow. Again thanks for the constructive comments.

Personally, I love my HHR. Last production year was 2011, so if you can get a used 2011 or 2010, I'd surely take a look. I can't even tell mine is behind me and you don't need to get a transmission pump or any mods like that.

Some 2013 and earlier Honda Fits should be down to $9000 now, since they cost as little as $12,000 new (what I paid for a manual transmission base model in 2012).

CR-Vs are going to be higher, as they are SUVs (so demand is high) and were a lot more expensive than anything else smaller than the Accord. Hondas hold their resale value well in most parts of the country.

If Saturns are difficult to find, most GM compacts and (four cylinder) mid-size cars from about 2010-2011 on back into the 1990s are just as towable as a Saturn: Chevy Cavalier and Cobalt, HHR retro wagon, Malibu; Pontiac Sunfire and G6, Grand Am, some Grand Prix; Olds Alero and some Cutlass; Buick Skylark, and so on. I just found 244 Cavaliers under $5000 asking price, within 200 miles of where I am sitting now (Detroit); the prices might be higher for non-rustbelt cars.

If you want an SUV, Equinox works as well as a Saturn Vue, for towing (the last Vue was a badge-engineered Equinox). At least 60 of those under $5000 within a couple hundred miles of Detroit.

Search cars.com for your location, be willing to stretch the range to cover a major metro area, or center the search there.

A Honda Fit might be a good choice for you. Through the 2013 model year, both the automatics and the manuals can be towed four down. (The 2015s and newer with the CVT cannot be towed four down; I think the manual versions still can be, but trust the manual over DrewE. There were no 2014 model year Fits.)
