Don’t fall for the ridiculous notion that choosing a gas truck gets you more capacity.
The on-paper stats may say so but in the real world actually pulling a trailer over the mountains the diesel will outdo the gas truck.
3/4 and one ton pickups are far more capable than the spec books say. They are intentionally way underrated so as to fit DOT truck classifications. The payload specs on 3/4 tons are not the real truth.
Don’t be fooled by the so-called heavy duty half tons having similar capacity to 3/4 tons.
The heavy-half will be maxed out, while the 3/4 with artificially de-rated numbers won’t even be close to it’s real capacity. .
It’s true, a half ton will pull the trailer you’re thinking of, and do an OK job of it.
I’d consider it if that truck’s main job was to be a daily commuter that occasionally tows something.
If your truck’s main purpose is to pull a trailer all over the country, you’d be crazy not to get a 2500/3500.
The big question is why WOULD you consider a half-ton for this job?
Smaller brakes, wimpy non-floating rear axle that only has one set of bearings on each side instead of two, a lighter duty transmission (that’s a HUGE deal on a towing truck)...
Why would you choose that?
