Looking for advice on great RV campgrounds in S. FL

We've been full-timing for awhile now and really tired of the cold weather here in TX. As such, we're gonna start the march down to Southern Florida in the next few weeks.

Curious what rv resorts the forums community would suggest in Southern Florida. We're not set on a particular area in FL as long as it's it in a warm climate for this winter.

We're hoping to find something that falls within this criteria:

  • Kid-friendly/family-friendly (we have a 5 and 3 year old and being stuck in a RV when it's cold outside has proven to not be so fun)
  • Under $1100 per month
  • Ideally close to a beach but not required

We've been full-timing as a family for 8 months and our favorite campgrounds have been the family friendly campgrounds. Now that we're about to push down to Southern Florida, not even really sure where to start looking to find a good place for us.

Any insight and feedback from the community would be welcomed!
  • Have you considered Brownsville, South Padre Island. It's where we go each winter and the weather was warmer than FL last year.
  • Try Rock Crusher Canyon in Crystal River. Although they do have a few really cold days there, it warms up quickly. Check their weather on www.weather.com for the next 10 days. Lots of places to bike ride, heated pool, near Manatee Springs and other state parks. Not too far a ride to the beach.
  • We stay at Fisherman's Cove near Tavares. Its less than a 1/2 mile from Lake Idamere Park which our grandsons love.

Fisherman's Cove is a very nice RV park and accepts both Good Sam's and Passport America. If you want the better view stay up on the hill. If you want better WiFi you will want to be closer to the pool.

I find most RV parks WiFi to be terribly overloaded so I really do not pay much attention to WiFi on their marquis.

One other tip, many of the rest areas allow overnight parking. General rule is if they say they have nighttime security then they allow overnight stays. While its free, it is very limited since they have no power or water, but a great place to hole up for one night.
  • The further south you go and the closer to the water, the more expensive private parks will be.

For example: North Florida, near the Fla/Ga. Border around $400.00 a month.

Naples Florida, just above the Everglades, around $1,100.00 a month

In the Keys, up to $2500.00 a month.

Of course, the further south you go the warmer it will be. Much south of Interstate 4 will be generally frost free.

    Hope this helps.
  • Any where south of Orlando there are many c/gs. However you will have a slim to 0 chance of getting into one this time of the year. You might try the bigger commercial c/gs first like Encore. The interior of Florida has more open spots during the winter season, but it is usually a long way to the beach. Prices will start about $1100 and up.
  • In SW Florida, between Disney and Tampa. A little trek to the beach, but it's probably the nicest State Park in FL. Maybe, the nicest SP in the SE of the USA. Book your reservation yesterday. They fill up fast.
    Lake Loisa State Park
Don't tell anybody. It's really nice.
There's also a membership-based Thousand Trails CG near by. My parents are full timers and stay there often, but I wasn't impressed. Extremely crowded and packed in tight.

The beaches on the East coast are more "beach" like, but you get to watch sunsets on the West coast. Sanibel Island, off Fort Myers, is expensive, but I think it's billed as the Shelliest Beach in the World. I had a lot of fun there, skipping high school, chasing girls and drinking beer. That was a long time ago. YMMV. It sounds like you're a bit past those types of activities, but there are a lot of shells.
