Looking for info on Dinghy towing my '03 CR-V

Ok Now that i'm gathering all the parts to Flat tow my Honda CR-V I'm getting nervous about the proper procedure?

I remember reading something about 1st you put the trans in drive then In Neutral & Then in park & etc etc....

I bought the car used with no manual that tells me how to Flat tow?

& now need to figure this out?

Thank you so much in advance of all your helpful info.

  • In addition to tropical ron's tip. Did you check the storage bin under the passenger seat? If you didn't have a manual to read, you might not know it's there.

  • Only if you have Nav. I have never removed fuses. I did run the battery down over three days of towing and not driving the car. Going to a funeral. Some run a charging wire. We rarely drive consecutive days.
  • While the engine idles and foot on brake, you shift from P to R to N then down through the gears, a few seconds in each, then slowly back up to N, letting it idle in N at least two minutes. Then turn off ignition. Never shift from R to N.

I repeat after 4-5 hours if we drive that long. Honda says to change the trans fluid every 30K if you flat tow.
  • I did a search and found the Owners manual for 2003 CR-V online at:
    http://owners.honda.com/vehicles/information/2003/CR-V/manuals

Page 224 begins about towing behind a motorhome. We have towed 2004 CR-v and now tow 2010 CR-v. The only variant is that we idle 2 minutes in each gear during the pre towing procedure. Over 40,000 miles. The backup camera keeps an eye on the car; we never feel it back there. Periodic stops to double check is a necessity. Good Luck; we really like the CR-v; it's my wife's daily driver.
