$6,000 to fix is a lot less than the first year depreciation on a new $70k RV. I would seek out another estimate for repair or even something like a Jasper Transmissions exchange.
Plus you will lose additional for trading in an RV that needs immediate repair.
Where I live $6,000 to fix would still be a $1,000 short of just the sales tax of new $70k RV would be and that's before any depreciation after a year.
I would keep fixing up old compared to new if just a $$$ decision. If other decision come into play ( design or livability ) then I might re-think.
Well, we can fix this one, but like I said, it is reaching it's majority in age. It's 20YO and we've had it for 12 of those years. It was our "training rig" and it's been good, but I'm also at a stage of life where, if we're going to keep doing this, I want some more space. The current one has no slides and is 29 ft. long. It has virtually no storage space inside compared to newer models That kind of cramped-ness was cute when we were younger, but now it's a pain to climb over each other and the dog all the time and have our stuff all over everywhere because there's no place to put it.
I guess I look at it this way: Knowing that this one is nearing the end, do I want to keep putting money into it, even though camping isn't as fun as it used to be in it, or do I want something else? Yes, to some extent this breakdown is an "excuse" to get something new, but we've also saved for this knowing the day would come. That it's here and our options are more limited than I would have thought, is disappointing.
