Loud Pickups

After rambling around West Texas for a couple of weeks and staying in campgrounds with a large number of oil field workers, I wish I could go back and apologize to all the folks I've annoyed with my noisy hot rods, motorcycles, and even a pickup or two. I'm old and cranky, now, I guess, but a diesel pickup leaving the campground at 5:am is really annoying! I'm glad they're working, but I WOULD like to sleep a little longer! I reckon it's payback for the sins of my youth.
  • I love the sound of a loud engine if it's loud for a legitimate reason. High compression, big cam, free breathing intake/heads/exhaust sounds great. But loud pipes on a stock engine is nothing but annoying noise, that doesn't even sound good to a hot rod guy like me. It's not the same.
  • Toddlers always feel the need to be as loud as possible all of the time. Some folks just never progress past that stage.

In nature, the quiet prey animals survive and the loud predators starve to death.

I learned my lesson as a teenager. My truck was loud and sounded sweet, but I couldn't sneak home after curfew without waking up my parents and the neighbors. These days, I try to be as quiet as possible when I'm around other humans who may want to enjoy the peace of being out in the woods with their RVs.

Of course, I have a 2003 7.3 liter diesel and you can hear it a block away. I have been looking for ways to quiet the darned thing down ever since I brought it home and realized that I am now the third loudest guy on my street. :o
  • Most of us who like/have sweet sounding vehicles do it for our own pleasure and not to impress anyone. I like the sound of a big cam and a free flowing exhaust on a V8. I am quite proud of the fact that I never grew-up and got old and crabby. I will do anything I can to stay in my childlike stage and enjoy life, life is short enough not to enjoy it to the fullest.

  • Hardly. Try the thunder of a Hemi with an 8-71 blower running a fuel mix of methanol, nitro, and hydrazine...7000RPM through open zoomies.

The F1 car sounds like a sportbike.
