We use the low clearances data in our Delorme Street Atlas software, and wouldn't plan a route without it. Like anything else, it's only as good as the user. As said, it doesn't provide any interactivity with the navigation part of your GPS unit - it just displays the info in some fashion on the screen. With Street Atlas, once the route has been automatically generated, I can then look at the route and manually tweak it to avoid any of those low spots or make any other tweaks needed.
With a Garmin, I don't know if you can twiddle the route that way, or if you can control how far ahead those POI icons appear. Just got a Garmin for the toad, and haven't had a chance to play with it all that much yet.
