The Mecury in the movie was a '53 Mercury Monterey Convertible with a 125 HP flathead V8. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Long,_Long_Trailer
My first trailer was a 1969 21' Layton and I towed it with my '69 Lincoln. Back then it worked fine with a 460 CID motor. A hitch dolly was advertised in the TL magazine at that time also. My TT only weighed 4400# empty. I think that '56 Mercury had about a 353 CID. I also lived in a 55' New Moon for a couple of years back in the early 60s. - bsinmichExplorerMy first trailer was a 1969 21' Layton and I towed it with my '69 Lincoln. - steve-n-vickiExplorerThe mercury he was driving changed to a Lincoln when they were in the mountains
- NaioExplorer IISure, towing with that sedan was an exaggeration for humorous effect. But I was fascinated by the idea of using what I would call a 'mobile home' as an RV. People really used to do that?!? I guess that's why they call them trailer parks.
- DurbExplorerI always wondered how they could pull that big trailer with a sedan. My wife recorded it and I watched a little more carefully. They had a two wheel hitch dolly under the trailer tongue and I think they had one of those hitches where the pivot point was at the differential to eliminate sway. I've never seen a hitch dolly used towing in real life but I have seen a lot of people that could have used one.
