Mailing medications

DH was just diagnosed with DVT. Now needs meds for 6 months to a year.

Our situation is this. Our insurance is based in Washington state. Prescriptions have to be filled there in order to be covered. They do not provide a prescription mailing service. Our son can pick up his medication, but how can he get it to us? He is also our mailing service.

We had him send us a different medication over a month ago, it has disappeared. So no pain meds for DH back.

Did a bit of research and found that it is illegal to put meds in the mail, so obviously that shipment was probably confiscated.

Has anybody else run into this? How have you handled it?

We are in Alabama, headed to Florida tomorrow.. We do not drive our motorhome I snow, icy weather so we are stuck in the south until the spring.

Any and all thoughts/ suggestions are appreciated.

A $700 a month prescription just is not in the budget.
  • You can send meds if you package them up and don't TELL anyone they're meds. I agree on FedX and UPS over PO. You may not be able to get a new plan, however, you CAN talk to the doctor and the insurance company about a 6 month fill. Some drugs, by law, are not allowed to be more than 30 or 90 days. I need a new cpap nasal piece every month. The medical supplier told me they could only give me one month at a time (a pain in the butt when you're traveling).....I called the dr. and he said it was okay to get more than one month. I finally by-passed the medical supplier and talked to the insurance company personally and found out they did NOT have a problem with a 6 month supply being sent to me..... So don't just take the word of one pharmacist.
  • Can the medications be shipped on FedEx or UPS, maybe they don't confiscate like USPS, You would have to have a ground shipping address to have them sent to you.
  • I order all my medications from Canada & have been for the last 7 years. I don't even use insurance.

It is by far less expensive !!!!! :B

Doc writes me a 6-month prescription, fax it & done.

Pm me if you want more info.
  • Wow you must have one screwed up health care plan. Both DW and I have used mail order pharmacies for years with no problems. DW has Kaiser and I am on VA. They both actually prefer you to use mail order. We have had meds mailed to where ever we happen to be no problem.
  • DH and I renew our prescriptions in MD when we see the DR. We get the first one filled at the local walmart. We created an online pharmacy account with them. Then, when we need a refill, we go online, log in to our account, and request a refill at whichever Walmart we happen to be close to. We have picked up our meds in Florida and Arizona. Our insurance doesn't seem to have a problem with this, but it is a PPO. You might check if this is a possibility with yours.
