Making the bed easier

Here is a picture or our bed. As you can see, it is nicely tucked away in a nook in the slide out. Unfortunately, this makes it hard to make the bed. I've got to reach over and pull on the sheets to get them all straightened out. Because of the contortions needed, (and because my wife doesn't value a made up bed as much as I do) my wife refuses to make the bed and I do it every morning after she gets out of bed.

My question is can this be made easier? Unfortunately, because of my extreme anal compulsiveness and other quirky mental defects, not making the bed is not an option for me.

Same issues as our's. We just pull the mattress down/out a couple feet and it then becomes easy to reach. We make it up then push the mattress back in; we then tuck whatever needs tucking at the end. Works well for us!

We take turns making the bed each morning. Whoever gets there first after breakfast makes it just like at home. :C
  • Ours is difficult as well. Fortunately I can pull the mattress down at the foot of the bed so it is not stuffed up in between the front closets. I make it while pulled forward then push the mattress back into the "hole".

Granted it does take some effort to pull the mattress down & then push it back but it is far easier than making the bed back in the "hole".

By the way with the name "holstein13" I wonder if the milk inspector is who made you anal. Around here Holstein is a dirty word, we were Jersey all the way!

Place elastic sheet straps at each corner of the fitted sheet or at least only at the top that fits into the slide out nook. You can get them at your local BB+B for about 10 bucks. Stitch the top sheet to the bottom edge of fitted sheet. Buy a duvet or have a seamstress make the existing comforter into a duvet. Any or all of the above should allow you to make your bed easier.

  • We put a sheet on the mattress and a couple of sleeping bags. No problem making the bed at all.
  • Waste of time to make the bed up, only to have it messed up again that night. We just throw the blanket/bedspread back on after we get out. To answer the question, why not just pull the mattress out a couple feet, make the bed, then slide the mattress back.
  • Great to see someone else who appreciates a well-made bed! Retired military? I can't claim that, recruiter didn't like the recent history of 4 fractures in my right leg. I was raised by a Commander in the US Navy, flew in the Pacific. My beds don't have the same level of accessorizing as yours, but neat and properly tucked. My son (US Army) said his drill sergeant in AIT would find my methods acceptable! What a compliment.

As to an easy method within the confines of an RV? Two years with the trailer and 30+ nights a year ... I haven't found an easy way about it. I do look at it as my yoga and stretching each morning though! Wife likes the look of it, but leaves those details to me.
  • I can see why your wife refuses to do it - you are a perfectionist. And I would guess the bed isn't the only example. :B
  • Same here I make the bed each morning when we are camping - I slide the mattress out of the "cubby" enough so I can fix up the sheets/blankets/etc.
  • If I had to go camping with you, I'd probably pack up and leave! The bed in my home doesn't even look that good. When camping, we don't make the bed. Just toss the covers over and get on with life! The only time we really struggle with the bed is when we change the fitted bottom sheet or have to straighten out the electric blanket. Then we pull the mattress down and out from the cubbyhole to put the sheets on the top end, then slide the mattress back up into position and slip the pockets on the bottom end of it. We do the same with the top sheet and blankets (when we do make the bed).... slide mattress down, put the head on, then slide back in place and do the bottom.

Our opinion is, it's going to get slept on tonight, why bother making it up! There's no one around to impress anyway? Well, maybe my doggie! But he doesn't need to be impressed, he just needs a good throw toy!
