This happened just two days ago at Buffalo Bill State Park. Two 14 yr old boys went hiking and trespassed inadvertently on private property adjacent to the park. The public trailhead was nearby but they took a wrong turn. The property owner (she)called me; We are camp hosts here and just arrived 5 days ago. The property owner has eight cabins they rent and I had stopped in earlier wanting to rent one for our son & family, who are visiting later this summer, so the owner had my phone number. She said two of my campers trespassed and was calling the sheriff. I explained we were new and was not familiar with this, but would call park police. I did that, and he called her back right away. Later, the boys mothers stopped by our host site and told us the following: The property owner forced the boys to walk back to their camp site about 1 mile, while she followed right behind on her ATV. On the way she kept telling the boys they were going to jail. She was very irate and rude to the parents and took all their pictures with her phone camera, as well as the car license plates. The boys were frightened and crying. Our final contact with park police was that he explained trespass laws to the boys and parents, but also laws to the property owner regarding her handling of the situation . He told them he could issue citations to the boys and the property owner or none at all if everyone agreed; apparently this is the choice they made. Needless to say, there is no way I will expose my family to this lady and her cabin rental; she had a legal right to enforce trespass laws, but no right to March those kids past her property line.
