Manitoba Class 3 Drivers License

This is a rather specific subject but am hoping someone who lives in Manitoba will be able to give me some feedback.
I am in the process of upgrading both my truck and trailer. Have sold the Dodge and am looking for an 2011/12 F350. Also looking for a larger 5th wheel. The 5ers we are looking at will put me over GVWR of 10000# and will require me to upgrade my drivers license to a Class 3. I have taken the written test and the medical (which is req every 3yrs till I'm 65, then annually thereafter). I am now able to drive a larger trailer if accompanied by a driver who has held a class 3 for 2 years.
To be able to drive the trailer unaccompanied a road test is required but here's the catch 22. I need the larger trailer to take the test. I can't drive the larger trailer to the testing facility until I have the license. I'm wondering if anyone has a solution for this dilemma, like a place to rent a unit to take the test. I live in Winnipeg. The local RV dealer may drive the unit to the test facility if I buy from them but I don't like having to buy from them.
I also understand I have to get a Safety Certificate on my TV every year. Is this true?
I'm learning all this piecemeal. No salesman tells you this stuff unless you specifically ask the right question.
  • I had a similar dilemma regarding the Class 6 (motorcycle) endorsement in Alberta. I just drove the bike to the test facility and the person administering the test never said a word about me driving to the site. Passed the test with no problem. Test involved following the test person in his vehicle. He made an illegal left turn and I did not, I just circled around and found him waiting for me. Not sure whether that was a trap or what!!!!! He also thought I put my feet down to early on a stop to which I inquired if he was a rider. No was the reply which was consistent with his comments regarding stopping!
felt like making a comment about getting out from under a tipped over Goldwing but decided that poking the bear was probably a really bad idea.

  • We have a similar requirement in Ontario and when I went in for my Class A test I had a friend who is a licensed tractor trailer driver come with me to the driving test with 15000 pound 5er in tow. If you do not know of any just ask around to a few friends and someone will have a buddy who will help you out.

I admire your patientence and tolerance for regulations. I have a question regarding the operative words " will require", what enforcement agency is going to monitor and issue violations while you are driving down the road. We have the same laws in Calif. but I doubt few RVers change their driving licences. Personally, I would just wait until you get a violation ticket for having the wrong Dr. license. Towing double does require a different class A license. Just my overall feelings about the over kill of "regulations and laws" of our society of laws:) In the final analysis, do what makes you comfortable:)
