Mattress Question

We want to purchase a new queen size mattress for our TT. Basic platform bed set up. Is there any reason we shouldn't buy a regular mattress like we have in our house? We do t like the memory foam that seems so popular... Thanks!

  • That's exactly what we did. King for home, queen for the trailer. Same make and model makes for the same sleep experience no matter where we are.
  • Our choice was the other way around. We wanted a California Queen Pillow top and re-built the frame to fit. Of course we made sure that this size mattress would fit the physical situation first.
  • According to their web site The Original Mattress Factory can make one for you that's a perfect fit and there are several locations in Florida. I need a short queen in my 'C'. A full size queen takes up the space from the back wall to the bedroom wall. Making a bed while you're in it isn't much fun. They had me measure from the back wall to the end of the platform and include the distance from the foot to the hinge over the storage area. Their bed is attached to a hinged wood frame that fits perfectly and I can still get around 3 sides of the bed while standing on the floor. And its a good bed.
  • just measure what you have there, we always get a 'real' mattress, we hate the 'rv' mattresses.

just copy what you have at home, minus the box springs.
  • Depending on RV, a queen may not really be a queen (shorter as previously mentioned). If you'll really have a full size queen (I'm 6'3" and have slept on the shorter ones with feet hanging out); if not, you may still be able to fit a full queen matress - just check clearances.

We've put a sleep number bed in ours and are very happy with it. I will tell you that the memory foam top is pretty hard if we haven't warmed up the camper when traveling in cold (subfreezing temps).
  • On my Crossroads the Queen and twin bunks are standard residential size.
  • A regular queen will overhang the end of the RV bed by about 5". If you can spare the room (you only sleep in there) go ahead and buy whatever regular mattress you like. It will probably be cheaper and you will be able to use regular sheets.

  • When we bought a new one for the house we asked the person at the mattress store about an rv mattress. We brought him the measurements of the platform an they custom cut one.

Although it was not the same brand as the house mattress it is a Jameson (hotel brand?) and we were able to choose our firmness. Hands down the way to go IIRC it was $400 and sleeps better than our house mattress.

Go to a good store that specializes in mattresses and have one cut for your rv in the support you want.
  • Uuugggjhhhh! Typos! We Don't like the memory foam mattresses. Sorry!
