I have a thin (2-3") one on top of the cheap RV mattress. It was a big improvement, from pokey and uncomfortable to sleeping well.
If you have a non-residential mattress size, the foam can be cut down to size pretty easily with a serrated bread knife (or, I've read, even more easily with an electric knife). I do suggest letting it air out for a few days prior to using it.
