Max trailer length

I had a CDL for a while. Gave it up for lack of use anymore.
Commercially you can pull a 53' on the national network just about anywhere in the country. I recall a friend talking about having trouble with camper length in California, so I started doing some research.

It seems quite a number of states limit RV trailer length to 40' including Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. A great number of fifth wheels are built in Indiana which leads me to question is this really enforced by police? Cleveland Ohio just had their RV show and PA is coming up shortly. I toured several 40’+ trailers.

Before we buy, is this really enforced across the country? To those who have 40’+ trailers have you had any trouble with law enforcement? I know camp grounds do limit length.

Thank you in advance

  • So let’s say I have a 41-foot trailer and I tell you ‘in 10 years I’ve never once had a problem’. So you go out and buy a 41-foot trailer and every time you pull it out of the driveway you get a $125 ticket. Then what?

You can’t count on breaking the law without consequences; regardless of anyone else’s experiences.
