trailer load max out

So I have a Dodge dually Deisel 5.9 cummins has a max towable load of about 10000 lbs. But I see 3/4 ton trucks towing trailers I know are about 14000 lbs loaded. So is my truck's rating wrong ?

  • Your truck and mine are not even equiv. to a new 3/4T.
    They've come a long way!

Those old trucks had some low tow ratings especially with the very weak auto tranny.
Now if your model truck has the 5 or 6 speed manual tranny then it will pull just about anything as long as the trailer hitch weight doesn't overload a tire/wheel/rear spring pack.
Lots of those trucks ran commercial service at over 26k gross combined back then.

That looks like the bump pull trailer rating, not a 5th wheel rating.

That's a gen 1 dodge and 10K towing is probably right for those year models, in all 3 brands. No comparison between that truck and a modern version. Todays Ram 3500 can be rated to tow up to 30k and a well equiped 1500 could easily tow the same 10K your truck is rated at.

Lots of advancements in the last 5 years much less 25.

    X2!

  • Dodge dually Deisel 5.9 Cummins ’72-’93 body style and engine 5.9L Cummins with Bosch VE injection pump?
  • What year? What model?

    I towed a 14,500 5er with a 2004 Ram 3500HD 4x4 auto quad-cab long-bed. Worked well.
  • We need more info to tell if you are overweight. Most likely you have an older truck if a dually diesel has a tow rating of only 10k. We also need the year, axle ratio, 2x4vs4x4, and ideally the trim package to get a good idea what your real tow rating is.

Also, is that the TT tow limit or the 5th wheel tow limit. They typically have different ratings.

Properly spec'd, 3/4 ton trucks can get up into the 14-15k range while staying in the ratings, though above around 12k, I would really prefer a 1ton SRW and by 15k I would want a dually.

Also, some people ignore the ratings.
