I can assure you, they do. They are found in public parks and even in boondocking spots on national forest and BLM lands. We've seen them as that's where we hung out. :) Many are full-timers and that's their home. Others pull a long enclosed trailer for their desert toys.

If you are not "putting down" the McRV'ers, I do not understand what you are doing. Just because they are "affluent" enough to invest $1 mil. or more in their hobby, does that make them less of a citizen? If you want to curtail the growth of McRV'ers, just get your representatives to pass laws that require CDL license for anything over 10,000 lbs. GW. That would curtail purchases of the large RV's quicker than any regulation available. It would help with road congestion and open up RV Park accessibility. Simple but effective.

No I don't want any restrictions on anyone way of RVing but referring to have a CDL or similar license on certain weights well that is already happening, even here in Nevada over 26,000 lbs you have to get a class A/CDL type license like they do in California and that does go after the big McRV owners.

I am way under that weight till I hookup my stacker trailer than I am over 26,000 lbs but I bet the Highway patrol wont know.

Yeah, I say "we" in the global sense. I just spent yesterday and today in my 40 year old 21ft clipper. The dogs watched the neighbors while sitting in the cab seats (their favorite spots). Dog toys strewn all over. And I cleaned and washed and did some adjusting of things. And in the end, I am just as happy with it today as I was when I bought it.

Cool on the Midas. They're still out there running. Will be interesting to see what it looks like. A friend just sent me a craigslist ad for a clipper. The outside is in really great shape! Unfortunately, they'd completely torn out the entire interior including the engine... But for someone wanting a project, it'd be a great place to start.

I take it to read that towables (in main) have gotten to be too much. And I agree. I can hardly see how my grandparents fulltimed across the US, Canada and Mexico without much more than clothing and food. That all aluminum 28' Streamline did the rest. The combined rig wouldn't have weighed much more than 13k.

Today there are these lumbering dinosaurs where the trailer itself weighs far more than that. What more is on offer? More space to heat and cool? More time spent cleaning?

Why on earth would someone want to solo in a one ton versus a full size car? Etcetera.

Mysteries abound.

Quantity replaced quality as a measure somewhere along the way.

Sort of like the size of the average American nowadays versus his forebear and the quality of their respective educations.

Just read posts here when folks are asking about buying an RV. Within 5 posts, the "buy bigger than you think you need" comments start coming out. As a solo camper with two large dogs, I've read many posts telling a potential solo camper with one medium dog that they need at least 27ft to be comfortable. I do it very comfortably in 21ft.

I think as a people, we have been bulls$!!! by advertising. We fall for the ploys easier than ever before. People don't know when to analyze a statement, let alone how to analyze it. They read "apples last longer than PCs" and they see it as a fact without looking into it further. They read "go bigger than you think you need" and they take that as a gospel truth.

I also think that many people fall into the "high" to buy. My dad used to do this. He would buy something new and would absolutely love it. But as soon as someone else bought one (regardless of age, quality, etc.), he was suddenly disillusioned with his and within 2 years would buy a newer bigger one. He would see how excited that person was with their new item and he would want that feeling again for himself. He spent a lot of money replacing perfectly good vehicles, RVs, boats, etc., because he saw someone else excited about theirs. I think this happens a lot more - forums like this, facebook. We're exposed to other people's purchase joy so much that it's harder for us to not want more and more of it ourselves.

When I was at our rv show last night I was reminiscing about my first show in 99. We were so young, eager and had no trailer knowledge as we towed our first tent trailer home. Now we have luxury and comfort beyond belief and sit in the "nicer" rigs pondering what might be next. As I saw young couples browsing tent trailers I was nostalgic for those simple days...dead batteries, cold damp canvas and tiny fridge....yet I wouldn't trade the memories for anything! I have so much respect for every camper out there no matter the stage of life they are at. I bet many in their 500k rigs took a similar path to me over their life.

I don't really care what type of rig someone else has as long as they are not encroaching on what I'm doing. If someone gets out, ties up several yapping dogs, sets up speakers that KISS would be impressed by, pumps up an inflatable theater, and starts blasting "My Little Pony" episodes, then there will be issues.
