Memorial Day

Memorial Day - a day to go shopping and have cook-outs. I don't think of it that way.

I think of my little brother who served in the Army in the early '60's and had cancer come back and eventually kill him.

I think of my son who had the courage to step up, seving 20 years in the US Navy.

I think of the people I have served with who just wanted to do the right thing for their country, and some of whom paid the supreme sacrifice.

I think of these every day.

I read that only about 3 percent of the country is doing the fighting and dying, leaving about 97 percent of the American populace basically sitting on their asses gathering profits.

My revulsion towards that 97 percent of those of ass sitters is overwhelming and complete.

  • Should we honor our armed services definetly and am proud of what they do. Have i served no, I have family and friends that have and currently do. Some how this seems sad that that we down play those that have not served. Does the 30 years that i served my community as a volunteer firefigther not count. How about the 20 years of public service through several different community services and local boards trying to make my home town better. Again YES i thank god for all that have served and each and every one that has come back.
  • George, it seems to me that you sure have a big adz chip on your soldier.

What is your problem, you did not have to stay for the pension? Suck it up and stop wining.

I to am retired from the service and spent five years in Pattton's own out there at Hood. Sure I know what a draft is, that is how I got aquainted with the green machine.

To all the rest of you folks out there, whether you served or not, have a great week end, try to stay dry, and give a few moments of thought to all those who have served.
  • Mr. Moore, while I thank you for your service I feel that you might have a little too much Archie Bunker in your blood. We only need 3% to kick anybodys butt evidently.

    :?

I think of ALL the men and women that died in combat being DRAFTED into the service. Not even having the choice whether they wanted to serve or not.

Today 100% of our military service men and women CHOOSE to serve and are compensated for doing so.
  • Only 10% or less ever stepped up to serve. Although I never had to leave our shores I am proud to have served my country in what ever capacity they deemed necessary.
  • Not everyone qualifies to serve. I have a niece who was so looking forward to serving in the Navy but sadly they discovered a medical condition which will prohibit her from serving. She was devastated since she devoted all the time she could to ROTC in high school and planned a career. Now she's trying to get her life back together and has had to rethink everything. Not all the 97% are worthless goof offs.
  • To the OP, I agree this day is much more important than merely cookouts and shopping, but other parts of your post puzzle me. At any rate, I thank you, sir, for your service to our great country and will also take the time to honor those who have served and sacrificed.

Due to disabilities, I was not able to serve in the Armed Forces. My son, son-in-law, and brother did however. I did serve this country for 30 years as a law enforcement officer and was injured in the line of duty, and then contributed over 6000 volunteer hours to the National Park Service. I am in that 97% that you have disgust for.
  • I also pay respect to my son who had the courage to step up, serving 20 years in the US Navy.

    Proud of you Clif!!
