Memory Foam pads?

We need a new mattress in our Truck Camper - and of course, headroom is an issue in the cab-over.

We now have a standard mattress in it, about 7"/8" thick, and would like to try what's called a 'memory foam' (4" thick) topper. Any reason it can't sit on the cab-over floor directly -- will probably put a half inch of solid insulation under it and lay it on that.

Any comments on this method or mattress type -- it seems a great answer for the shorter head-room area too.

The 'memory foam' part does not really 'remember and form' itself, right? It returns to the flat/level foam when you move or get off it? Is that accurate? Thanks BD
  • I'd suggest to get 4" of high density foam instead of the memory foam. It will be more comfortable and if you get the older standard memory foam, will be cooler. Everyone that has slept on my new foam mattresses has said they are very comfortable, including me. Mine are 4".

I bought good quality foam at an upholstery supplier. You can cut and glue up two pieces in about 5 minutes to fit your space and it will be better foam than a mattress and be 1/5 the cost.

    Good luck with the bunk.
  • I would try one on top of the mattress you have. We were given one on laid it out of top of our mattress,
  • Not all memory foam is made the same ... (Same for other types of foam padding.) Check the density of the foam. Denser foam will provide better support in the 4" height, less dense won't. Most toppers are not very dense, meant to provide a plush feel on top of another mattress that provides most of the support.
  • I do not think you will be happy with the 4" memory foam lying directly on the plywood. I tried it and was not comfortable. I have a 4" topper on my old mattress but I do not need to worry about head room. I would suggest trying a 2" memory foam topper on the old mattress.
  • I tried a 4 inch memory foam pad on the plywood of our motor home bed. It was not comfortable at all. Ended up with a 2.inch foam pad on top of the motor home mattress. We thought it very comfortable. Of course we did not have to worry about had room.
  • Actually we got a 4 inch memory foam topper a few months ago. We let it air out on our living room floor for a few days before putting it on the bed. While on the floor we laid on it to _______. Very comfortable. I fell asleep after _______ slept really well.
So I say it will be fine

If I don't get it here, will try TC forum next -- much more experiences here tho ... if I go now, will get spanked for double post :( :)

I know, I tried to sort through them, but a lot go off topic pretty quickly. And most talk about the topper going on a regular bed, not directly on the floor of the cab-over. Might be a little different, so looking for that cab-over experience.
