Re Ford transmission problems; I still have my '93 1T diesel cube van I used for work. The electronic transmission always acted up, apparently due to a faulty speedometer module, a common problem. The age of the van doesn't warrant repair, which I use primarily as storage. The speedo jumps around, meaning the poor transmission doesn't know what to do and flares, causing damage over time. That may be the cause of the early '90s problems you mention. Ford quit making the speedometer part in question, so it's a scramble to repair it. As to late '90s...??
I mentioned the Ford chassis as it is 15200#. Chev is 14800#.
I'm aware that an older rig will have to be gone over with a fine-tooth comb by a qualified tech.
I'm not well-informed about the quality of Winnebagos. Mass-produced, so a lot likely hinges on QC. The fact they survived the melt-down means something, although that could be nothing more than deep pockets. Lots of rigs available, and affordable.
