Missing RV'er in Ocala, FL

This is a in your face reminder for all our RV'er friends that live alone and RV travel solo.

Make sure you have an "ICE" placard on your visor, fridge, and in your wallet for you AND your pet. In Case of Emergency. So this doesn't happen to you or your worried family.

So they can contact family in case of an accident and/or if you pass away, who and where should your pets should go to.

This was posted on a group I belong to the other day.

Thankfully this story had a good outcome. He was missing for 11 days before the family found out he was alive and where he was at.

""THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR PRAYING AND SHARING!!!
This is directly from his sister.

Mike Reno has been found!!!
Mike was in a very bad accident in Columbia County on July 24. He didn't make it far out of Ocala.
He was originally in the University Hospital Trauma center, but has been temporarily moved to a rehab center in a week, he'll be moved back to the trauma center. When he is finally discharged, he will have to remain in FL for another 30 days as he will not be allowed to travel.
He has 2 stints in his kidneys, a bad concussion, broken shoulder blade, punctured lung and broken ribs. His phone and laptop are still in his van, so he had no way to contact anyone.
He says the police told him his Runaway is fine. His main concern is getting it out of the tow yard and back to somewhere safe until he can make arrangements. If anyone can help with that, please let me know.
His cat is being cared for at the shelter and was uninjured. They told him they will take care of the cat until he is released.
I will fly Mike home to my place when he can travel. It will be sometime before he will be able to be alone.
God is good!!! Thank you for your prayers and all of your help.
He has a long road to recovery, please pray for him.""

  • Same here. Most of the time it's next to the A-piller on the dash.
And the cell phone is in one of the cup holders.

  • His laptop and cell phone where left in the van which was taken away after the accident.

EMT's took care of him and brought him to the hospital.

I'm guessing since it was not a crime there would be no reason for the police, fire and/or emt's to search his car for anything other than to extricate him, stabilize and transport.

Makes you wonder just what responsibility it is of the hospital to locate a family member? There would have to be a specific hospital employee hired for just that reason. You couldn't have Dr's and nurses doing investigative work.

So if you are unconscious I guess you're pretty much left on your own until someone reports you missing? An ICE card in his wallet would have helped him.

You can also prefix emergency contacts with A-ICE on your cell phone. That way they show up first.

I have ".ICE1" and ".ICE2" in my contacts. Note the period preceding ".ICE", that puts it before ANYTHING else.

(For those technically inclined, the ASCII code for "." is 46, the ASCII code for "0" is 48, the ASCII code for "A" is 65, the ASCII code for "a" is 97. Computers sort characters by their ASCII code.)

Wow, I am so glad he is (sort of) ok! Being injured and unable to travel, when you are far from home, is really rough. Happened to me last winter. Much stress.

If you have a cat, get a microchip too. They tend to take collars off. Mine takes his off to play with it!
  • Glad he was found and is in relatively good shape.

Whether one is solo or not, this is a good reminder. Even with two travelung together, an accident can happen and neither of you might be in condition to make contact with family, etc.

Also, when traveling with pets, always keep a copy of their vaccinations, etc., in the RV. And always have a collar on them. In an accident, the animal could be very scared and that collar may make the difference between getting a hold of the animal or it getting loose.
  • Most cell-phones I know of allow access to ICE numbers even when locked. I have created separate contact entries titled Wife, Sister and Brother (Emergency response personnel have no idea who Martha or Leroy are!!) with nothing but the phone number.

This actually comes in handy for calling the wife (Pretty much the only call I make) without having to unlock my phone
  • Made me smile when I read this part.
A tried and true RV'er worried about his camper more than himself! :C

""He says the police told him his Runaway(TT camper)is fine. His main concern is getting it out of the tow yard and back to somewhere safe until he can make arrangements. If anyone can help with that, please let me know.""
