MN new laws August 1st

Minnesota now has a law saying that the left lane on a multi lane road is for passing only. They also have a hands free cell phone law in place now.

I thought this may be of interest to people visiting here.

Does the Minnesota law say you can't drive in left at all except for passing? Or is the wording something like - "when reasonably able" only drive in the right lane.

I have been on roads with little to no traffic (rare these days! lol) and stayed in the left lane to reduce damage on my TT. But... I keep an eye behind me, and when someone come up on me I move over.
  • I agree with using the left lane when the right lane is unusable!

Also, the hands free law is BS anyway. It's not about having 2 hands on the wheel. It's about being able to walk and chew gum at the same time. Most people can't do more than 2 things at once. And when they try we get these goofy laws that affect the 90% that can.
  • Get used to it, this law is becoming widespread. I drove illegally in the left lane on I-84 in Idaho, I couldn't take the pounding in the right.
  • I agree with fj12ryder. We already have plenty of laws they don't enforce now. Just added a couple more. Barely slow down for stop signs, drive as fast as you want, turn signals are optional. MN land of 10,000 lakes and some of the worst drivers in the country. Not to worry mandatory proof of insurance laws aren't enforced either. Legislature makes up lots of laws but they don't provide any additional means to enforce them.

  • There's plenty of times that we move into the left lane because the right lane is terribly bumpy. The law keeping people out of the left lane is insane. I like the law in Arkansas, don't impede traffic in the left lane.
  • If it's like any other state, it's just a "feel good" law, makes some people happy, but there's no real enforcement. Just an empty shell.

Not that they aren't worthwhile offenses to be on the books, but they don't really mean squat.
