Montana/Idaho #93

It's a north-south routing that will have you absolutely spell-bound. I drove it south today, starting in Missoula and ending the day in Challis and it is quite the ride. 57 miles between gas stations from Salmon to Challis..or in reverse...and it was a fierce wind blowing. But man oh man...the cliffs on the one side and Salmon River on the other and lots-lots-lots of river accesses..National Forest stuff. Ranches and canyons and so much to see.

If you haven't tried it...it's not a fast route, but it sure is a pretty one.

on edit...I now need to add #75 from Challis over to Boise...holy moly....

    Gary,

    Great pictures!

BTW, I'm curious ... some of the photos on your blog are B&W. Do you kindof specialize in B&W photography?

I thought I was going to be a famous b/w artist, back in a different life. I love shooting it and given the options, every time.

  • You are so right, Gary. We took that route last year and thoroughly enjoyed the drive. I was amazed at how quickly the scenery changed: from the plains around Missoula the road then squeezes through the narrow mountain pass, followed by the arid beauty of the Salmon River canyon. This is why I avoid the interstates when traveling through the States.

Thanks for sharing this! It sounds AWESOME!

    Do you have any pictures?

Do I have? Yes...but I have poor wifi strength so it'll be a day or so before I can get them up.

As has has been mentioned now, bu another, it is an awesome area. I think the mistake many will make is to just zoom along. It really is worth exploring over a number of days.

okay...I have been able to update my Blog. So..the first 4 pix are the beginning of the drive. The rest are of a bunch of cool stuff I happened upon.

  • Gary, I agree, its one of my favorite summer routes. Here is a shot where I was camped right along the river below North Fork, Id. Every morning as we were having our coffee this herd would come down to the river for their morning drink.
The nearby Sawtooth mountains, around Stanley, Id are also not to be missed.
