When I go camping I accept it's different from sitting in my central heated and A/C'd residence BUT am so not wanting to deal with the pioneer experience of biting bug life. That's when I step back into the current century and apply a minimum of 20% DEET in the evenings and soak my tent and sit by the fireplace lounging clothes in Sawyer's Permethrin Spray.
Works like a charm.
Various studies have been done that show that the amount of chemical penetration and danger is minimal to humans. Here's a link from the EPA:

When I start RVing I'll spray the Sawyer's on window and door screens and gerrymander an outdoor foyer/vestible made of fine tent mesh also sprayed w/ the Sawyer's.
