Mossy Oak generator

I recently saw a 1200 watt surge/950 watt continuous, Mossy Oak generator on craigs list, but can't find a DBA spec.
It is a 2 stroke.
Does anybody have any knowledge of this generator.
It would be for emergency power in a 21' TT, and light battery charging if staying off grid.
I know Honda and Yamaha are the best, but not in my budget right now, and I can get this for $75.
Any opinions greatly accepted.

  • This is a clone of a Yamaha ET800 design... A generator made in the 1970s. It has little to no voltage regulation other than the fact the governor tries to spin it at 3600 RPMs (3000 RPMs if in Europe.) Add or drop a load, and you will get a spike.

For a C-note, it is an OK generator. Make sure to pull the spark plug and replace it with a top brand, follow the oil/fuel mixing directions exactly, and break it in as per directions. However it is cheaply made and puts out extremely dirty power.

Personally, other than price and the fact they are "disposable", I wouldn't get one. I'd save up a few more C-notes and buy a Champion open frame model which will last a lot longer.

Look at the cheap Harbor Freight 2-stroke genny, or google it and you'll get lots of info on how to make it run properly. The genny has a following but is not suitable for campgrounds. Might work fine for your intended use. They're usually around $100 or so.
  • Any 2-stroke by nature is going to be loud as compared to a 4-stroke.

I would not want a generator that requires fuel/oil mixture.

Since budget is a concern, I would recommend this one. Yes, this is the one I personally have. It is very dependable, starts easy, highly rated & really not loud at all. 1500 rated / 1200 continuous.

PS, If you find one of these on Craig's List - Grab it.

  • Thanks anyway. It seems to have sold already. I'd still like to hear from anyone who has seen one of these running.
    Thanks beemerphile.
  • I'm sure it is similar to the Harbor Freight 800/900 generator that sells for around $100. Many other places sell the same generator at larger capacity, they are all basically the same. Not quiet, not exceptionally loud.

I use the HF model around home to power tools, but have never taken it camping. I have the Champion 2000I for camping.
