MPG loss carrying Canoe on TV?

We're trying to figure out a way to have a watercraft with us as we travel the country. If we carry a canoe on top of the TV will we lose even more gas mileage? We now get a whopping 8.4 mpg pulling the trailer.

Anybody have experience carrying a canoe (or other boat) long distances?
  • No difference here either, or at least not enough to matter.
  • I carry an 18' canoe sometimes, and a 12' solo sometimes, I made a rack that fits into the bed of my pickup, You probably will not need it with the cover you have. I can see no drop on MPG. as the canoe's have a pointed end that deflects the wind even so, it is well worth the effort. I use a double "Y" tie down to the front and back. You might even consider a square stern canoe with the small motor on the back or an electric trolling motor. Happy canoeing and camping and merry christmas.
  • Years ago I read a story by a guy doing a review of a van. One of the strange things he happened to find out was he got better mileage with a canoe on top of the van. It made it more aerodynamic. I think that was in the early 80s.
  • 84 vs 8 what is the difference in a practical way.
With the price of petrol at a very low price you are probably talking a buck or buck and a half a tank full
  • Carry a canoe and a kayak. Really don't notice anything different while towing, but hey how much worse can it really get when you're getting between 10-12mpg?
  • My gas millage is awful with or without our kayaks, never noticed a difference. In the big picture of things just go for it! :C

  • I don't think it will make much of a difference. It will be worth it for the convenience of having the canoe with you.
  • I carry two kayaks on the truck roof and two bicycles on a front mount hitch on the front of the truck with no noticeable mpg loss.
