My over 13' rv went under a 13' clearance bridge

Can someone explain how they come up with the clearance signs. The last one I went through showed 13'0" on one of those yellow signs. Im in Ny and have a 38' rv. Now, I know for a fact to the top of my air conditioner is over 13'. Its more like 13 and 1/2. So on this particular road I know tractor trailers use it. So, i looked back and said there is no way Im backing up to an intersection. So i crept up VERY slowly holding up traffic and got out a couple times to check and I cleared it. How is this possible?
  • Maybe the measurement was less in anticipation of people disregarding the height warning, which is what you did. I's say they did you a favor.

    Now this is funny!

Somewhere you'll find where they measured right.
  • Some roads they list the height at the curb. Our Sprinter clears the road out of Acadia from Jordan Pond. According to the sign its 10' but it's a true arch and probably closer to 12 in the center. Another example is the Bluerdige Pkwy, the guides list the lowest height at the curb, middle and center.
  • Or maybe they just don't know what they are doing.
A now retired from VDOT friend told me once that they could pave a hill so that standing water was an issue :).
  • And maybe, they post the clearance lower the the true measurement in anticipation of future paving or repairs.
    Or, just for safety reasons.
  • Or somewhere they measured it too high. Happened at a viaduct near my work. Truck calling a load of PAM vegetable oil spray peeled the top off the trailer, caught on fire, blew up all the cans, burned up and destroyed the roadway.

    Don't be that person.

  • Same way my 13' 4" 5vr went under an overpass marked 12' 8".......not properly marked.

I also was in NY. Came over bridge and road circled around to right then merged with road that went back under bridge I had just crossed. No other way to go but under.....so I stopped before merging.
LOTS of cars backed up behind me. I got out and saw a parking lot I could back up into if the first five cars behind me could move to right. As I was about to motion folks to move a guy in truck way back YELLED......you'll make it. Semis go thru all the time. Sign is wrong.

So we crept up to overpass......I hopped up on truck bed and looked like 5vr would go.
    On thru..no crunch.

Maybe roadway had been ground down/removed during last paving job vs just adding more paving.

Sometimes the signs are just plain wrong. Could have been shorter than stated vs taller!!
  • Someone's incorrect in their measurement.

Most overpasses are crowned in the center also. They usually measure the lowest part.
