I live on Oak Island where the two young kids got bit and the growing consensus is that its the larger than normal turtle population in the area. Probably fueled by warmer water.....
I walked the beach yesterday morning with the pooch and saw at least 5 new turtle nests. Usually it's a rare occurrence to see them on my short beach walk. I think there are at least 70 so far this season on the island. In a month or two there will be at least one or two crawls a night here on the island, that should be on everyone's bucket list.
Of course the fisherman on the piers dumping blood and fish heads to attract sharks doesn't help. A good rule of thumb is to stay far away from any fishing pier when at any beach.
