The 11 foot 8 eight inch bridge in Durham, NC which has a lot of "canopener" wrecks. What the railroad did was put up a steel frame a few feet before the bridge to take the impact of vehicles going in. Perhaps something like the signs, computer warnings, Gobotech's waterfall stop sign, then before the tunnel, the frame. That way, the tunnel only gets the already-shredded mess.
