If you do this and you are old enough to buy the senior pass at any national park or forestry service or corp of engineer ranger station. You can then get the senior discount and camp usually for $10 or less per night. You should also join Passport America and try to use some of their parks at 50% off normal rates - 1,800 campgrounds in the US. But --- your best/cheapest rate will be if you find a place to stay monthly, seasonally or some have annual rates. Also check out freecampsites.net for some cheap or boondock locations.
