Could your tire pressures (especially front) be too high? The vague steering could definitely be caused by that.
Also, might want to have the alignment checked, and make sure it's a max caster (5.5 degrees). When you hook up the trailer, you lift the front which reduces the caster angle. If yours was set at factory minimum (1.5 degrees) it could be going to zero when the trailer is hooked up. Little to know caster makes poor stability and steering feel.
