Never RV without your propane shut off at the tanks

I was in the accident linked below last Tuesaday. After the crash the truck was still running and i was unable to reach the key to shut it off until I finally managed to release my seat belt. There was a strong smell of propane. The hoses from the tanks on the trailer hitch had severed and propane was leaking out rapidly. An explosion was a very real possibilty.

BTW, the police told me I was very lucky to survive. Injured but alive

On another note, I had a dash cam they are a good thing to invest in.

Why did you swerve to the point you went off the road? Just like a deer jumping out in front of you on the road you do not ever swerve off the road. Did the guy who cut you off stop? I can't believe it would have been worse had you made contact with that other vehicle instead of going off the road. Glad you are OK though.

when you have 1.5 seconds ot make a decision you do what your instinct tells you, There was a chance it could have made it around, the soft shoulder said otherwise
  • I was injured.

Glad you were not injured.......that is one heck of an accident.
Real reality check on how FAST things can occur!

As for the propane... smell is intense and BUT the Excess Flow Limiting devices inside the ACME Green Nut shuts down the propane flow to a very minimum rate.
'Sound' makes it seems like a lot.
Especially when one has just gone thru an event such as that wreck

RV Propane Systems are well thought out with numerous safety features.
Fact is it is safer then the Tow Vehicle Fuel System
  • The idea of stopping on a highway to make a left turn is insane. I suppose the natural reaction is to swerve, but in many cases it's better to hit the deer, the dog, or the other vehicle. Just 20/20 hindsight.
  • I would have made the big Dodge hold its own and blast the other guy. Same thing if an obstacle suddenly appears. Never swerve with a big trailer. Blast through it.

When PP lines are suddenly cut and have a large escape of gas, the built in valve shuts them down. If that didn't happen then the leak was very small.

  • Glad to hear you're okay. Your rig will take a box of pop rivets and a couple rolls of duct tape to get it rolling.

It's good that you had a dash cam..
