Since the VW is quite low, I raised the tongue of the dolly to the maximum recommended by Demco. An inch results in quite a change at the end of the ramps! The ramps still touched the car in some situations but, never enough to produce damage. This usually only happens entering or exiting service stations. When I suspect the ramps will hit, I move very slowly so as to minimize the impact.
